Having entered under the Turkish domination with Saruhanoğulları Beylic, Gördüs was
regarded as among the counties of Saruhan Sanjak in the XVI. century. The foundations, which
emerged with the donations of the properties or real estate owned by some individuals for the needs
of people or animals, spreaded considerably in the lands of the Ottoman Empire as well as making
progress within the Gördüs district in the XVI. century. Covering the needs of the Ottoman society in
many fields from education to health, sheltering to nutrition, from worship to cleanliness facilities,
these foundations also seem to have supplied the state treasury indirectly to keep its power due to the
fact that they ligthted burden of the state’s allocating funds from the budget for such services.
Considering the effect of foundations on placing Turkish and Islamic culture in a region, the positive
contribution of the foundations established here in Turkification and Islamization of Gördüs and its
surroundings cannot be ignored accordingly. In this study, we investigated the foundations spreadwide
in the central and rural areas of the Gördüs district besides the features they had by identifying
the cadastral record books of Presidential Ottoman Archives and the foundations of the General
Directorate of Land Registry Cadastre in the Kuyud-ı Kadime Archives. As a result of study that there
were 4 mosques, 12 masjids, 5 Islamic monasteries and lodges, 2 Turkish baths, 1 school as well as
various monetary foundations, and structures such as fountains and bridges funded by the
foundations. In the study these were discussed respectively.
