Çüruksulu Meziyet’in “1934 Dil Bayramı’na Armağan” olarak sunduğu “Savaştan Barışa” isimli
During this process, In the 1932, Atatürk supported the establishment of Turkish Language
Institution, and shortly after then Language Congresses were commenced. Under the nation-state
policy, this was the beginning of the invention of Pure Turkish words and/or new words appropriate
to Pure Turkish and popularizing of those words. Also, in this process, it was frequently emphasized
that Turkish must be saved from the enslavement of Western or Eastern languages and the major
supporters of the language policies were the intellectuals, academicians and literary people of the
period.
During Atatürk period, one of the most interesting and important works written under the Pure
Turkish language policies was Vala Nureddin and his wife Çüruksulu Meziyet’s novel Savaştan
Barışa (“From War to Peace”) which was introduced as “a present to 1934 Language Festival.” The
authors defined the novel as “now the first okuş [novel] in its own kind” and claimed that they had
not used “any foreign words” and it was “pure and simple Turkish.” While forming the language of
the novel, they stated that they used the words from “TaramaDergisi” (Examining Journal) and from
the dialects of Turkish language. At the same time, they used some new words that they invented. At
the end of the novel, they constituted a glossary, named “New Pure Turkish Words We Used”
consisting of the words that stay out of the standard Turkish language of the period. And the new
words they offered in the glossary were indicated with a question mark (“?”).
